Sheryl Jaffee Halpern is a partner who concentrates her practice in employment law, including counseling clients regarding compliance issues under federal and state employment laws, conducting employment practices audits, compliance training of management and staff, preparation of employment policies and handbooks, preparation of employment and separation agreements and restrictive covenants, investigation of discrimination and harassment complaints and disciplinary matters, and defending claims at the Illinois Department of Human Rights, Illinois Human Rights Commission, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Illinois Department of Labor, and in litigation in state and federal courts. Ms. Halpern also lectures and writes on a variety of employment law topics.

Ms. Halpern’s clients commend her for being responsive, accurate, and thorough. She provides clear and direct guidance designed to promote compliance with the law, while remaining cognizant of practical workplace realities her clients face.

The employment-based claims against which Ms. Halpern has defended her clients include sexual harassment, discrimination on the basis of race, age, national origin, gender, religion, and disability, as well as retaliation, wrongful termination, defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, tortious interference with contract (involving restrictive covenants), and breach of contract. Ms. Halpern recently was a presenter of Cancer in the Workplace: A Legal Perspective, at a seminar sponsored by the Cancer Wellness Center in Northbrook, Illinois, and Legal and Practical Considerations for Operating a Small Business: An Employment Law Primer for Small Businesses, sponsored by the National Business Institute.

Ms. Halpern received a B.A. in Speech Communication from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1990. In 1993, she received her J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law, where she served as a board member of the Moot Court Honor Society and a legal writing teaching assistant. Ms. Halpern was admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1993 and is also a member of the Bar of the U.S. District Court, Northern and Central Districts of Illinois, U.S. Court of Appeals, Seventh Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court. In addition to her law practice, Ms. Halpern is on the Executive Committee for the Chicago-Lincoln American Inn of Court and a member of the American Bar Association and the Society for Human Resource Management.
